Prior to a minor tournament being played in Kent the battle for The Claret Jug took place at St. Ives GC on a sunny and reasonably warm day – a rarity in my experience of St. Ives. The wind was however blowing as normal presenting some challenging conditions for the assembled golfers.
After the customary drinks and an excellent bacon roll, play started with the first 3 holes straight into the wind – lovely.
The course was in great condition if you stayed on the short stuff as the long stuff was not very pleasant, maybe not quite as penal as at St. Georges but not far off. It obviously was hiding plenty of food for this visitor.
Food was definitely a highlight of the day as the evening meal of a Pork and Beef Carvery was followed by a beautifully presented dessert. The catering and staff were duly praised for a magnificent meal and service throughout the day.
The Nearest the Pin prizes on holes 7 and 12 were both won by David Honnor from the visitors from Kent.
However the overall result went in Cambridgeshire’s favour with The Claret Jug being presented to Captain Malcolm.
