It is with great sadness that we must inform members of the passing of our Vice President, John Latham, on Friday, 3rd July 2026.
John Latham will be remembered as a man of extraordinary generosity, vision, and dedication. His contribution shaped both the course and character of Saffron Walden Golf Club
John joined Saffron Walden Golf Club in 1969, and his enthusiasm and willingness to help were evident from the very beginning. When plans were made to extend the course from nine to eighteen holes in the early 1970s, John and his brother Simon played a vital role in realising these ambitions. In 1973, as work commenced on the additional nine holes, John and Simon generously loaned the Club heavy equipment, enabling the construction of tees and greens. Much of the work was completed in-house, significantly reducing costs and securing the future development of the course.
In 1978, John was asked to lead the Club’s tree planting program, with the aim of creating the atmosphere and character expected from a true parkland course. Between 1980 and 1984, John and his team planted approximately 4,000 trees, establishing the magnificent backdrop that defines the course today. He approached this work with care and expertise, selecting species for practical purposes and for their seasonal beauty, transforming the course into landscape of colour and character throughout the year.
Many of the trees were donated personally by John, along with the labour required to plant and maintain them. Among his favourite trees was the Turkey Oak, two of which he donated, one for himself and the other planted in memory of his beloved wife Angela near the 16th fairway—a living tribute reflecting his love of nature and devotion to family.
As Chairman of Greens from 1979 until 1988, John oversaw major developments that transformed the Club and its facilities. During his tenure, he supported the development of the Course Manager role, encouraged training and advancement of greens staff, improved facilities and buildings, and introduced the use of specialist advice. His efforts ensured both immediate improvements and a long-term vision for the Club’s future.
John also served as Club Captain in 1984 and became a Trustee from the mid-1990’s onward. In recognition of his exceptional service, he was elected Honorary Vice President in 1989. He was also SCAGC Captain in 1996
John’s contribution extended far beyond his official roles and titles. He freely gave his time, generously shared his expertise, and worked with quiet determination to leave things better than he found them. The magnificent setting enjoyed by members and visitors today stands as a lasting testament to his care, dedication, and vision.
Past, present, and future members of Saffron Walden Golf Club owe an enormous debt of gratitude to John Latham. His legacy will continue to grow and flourish in every tree planted, and every season that transforms the course he loved so deeply.
He will be remembered with affection, gratitude, and immense respect.
